The Germanist and writer Peter von Matt, who passed away on 21 April 2025 at the age of 87, was one of Switzerland's most distinguished and original minds, with a reputation that extended far beyond the country's borders.
A memorial service will be held at the Schauspielhaus Zurich on 14 September 2025 at 7.30 p.m. to commemorate Peter von Matt and express our gratitude and affection for this extraordinary personality.
Speakers on the evening will include Barbara Frey, Simone Lappert, Lena Schwarz, Moritz Leuenberger, Peter Nobel, Michael Krüger and Martin Meyer.
The evening will be accompanied by performances by the Merel Quartet (Schubert, Ravel) and Simone Felber and friends.
Afterwards, refreshments will be served in the foyer of the Schauspielhaus, offered by Philipp Schwander.

Peter von Matt (born in Lucerne in 1937, died in Zurich in 2025) was the son of a book and stationery dealer and grew up in Stans. He studied German language and literature, English language and literature, and art history in Zurich. He then worked as a secondary school teacher in Lucerne before becoming a professor of modern German literature at the University of Zurich in 1976. Peter von Matt gained fame with his books on literature and the political landscape of Switzerland. He received numerous awards for his work, including the Swiss Book Prize in 2012 (source: SRF).
