Erwachen in der Wirklichkeit. Deutschland in Europa

The postwar European consensus rested on the fact that the Germans, readmitted to the community of nations, were allowed to build up economic power but had to impose restrictions on themselves in terms of military power, including the integration of combat units into NATO. That is currently changing, essentially spurred on by Putin’s war of aggression against Ukraine. Together with the emerging transformation of the EU from a rule-governing actor into a political actor, this will lead to a change in the balance of influence and power in the EU that will change the political face of Europe in the long term. This development will not be universally applauded and will therefore have to be handled with great caution.
