Professor Roman Herzog

Former President of the Federal Republic of Germany

Short Bio

Professor Roman Herzog was born on 5 April 1934 and received his doctorate in Munich in 1958. After years as a private lecturer and professor in Munich and Berlin, Roman Herzog occupied various seats within the state government before being appointed Vice President and later President of the Federal Constitutional Court in 1983. In 1994, he was elected Federal President. Since the end of his term in office, Roman Herzog has been active as an academic and journalist. In 2000, he chaired the Convention for the drafting of the EU Charter of Fundamental Rights. Since 3 October 2003, he has chaired the "Convention for Germany", whose main theme is to improve Germany's ability to reform. He is also chairman of the board of trustees of various foundations in Germany.
