Dr Constanze Stelzenmüller

Director and Fritz Stern Chair, Center on the United States and Europe, Brookings Institution

Short Bio

Dr Constanze Stelzenmüller is an expert on German, European, and transatlantic foreign and security policy. She is the first holder of the Fritz Stern Chair on Germany and trans-Atlantic Relations at the Brookings Institution. Since March 2020, she has been a Senior Fellow at the Center on the United States and Europe at the Brookings Institution. From October 2019 to March 2020, she held the Kissinger Chair on Foreign Policy and International Relations at the Library of Congress. From 2014 to 2019, she was the first Robert Bosch Senior Fellow at the Brookings Institution. Prior to her time at Brookings, Dr Stelzenmüller directed the Berlin office of the German Marshall Fund of the United States (GMF), where she was a Senior Transatlantic Fellow. Among other things, she also directed the influential Transatlantic Trends survey program there. From 1994 to 2005, she was editor of the politics section of DIE ZEIT. Her articles have appeared in Foreign Affairs, Internationale Politik, the Financial Times, the Washington Post, and the Süddeutsche Zeitung.
