Professor Heinz Bude talks about why we need a new understanding of solidarity today.
Tuesday, 02. April 2019, 19:00 – 20:00 h
At Literaturhaus Zurich, Limmatquai 62, 8001 Zürich
There was a time when solidarity was a powerful word, but it fell into disrepute when everyone was made personally responsible for their own fortune and their own needs. Today, according to Bude, we need a new understanding of solidarity: Only by freely choosing human solidarity can a society be bound together.
Heinz Bude, born in 1954, studied sociology, philosophy and psychology. Since 2000 he has held the professorial chair for macrosociology at the University of Kassel. From 1997 to 2015, he led the department ‘The Society of the Federal Republic’ at the Hamburg Institute for Social Research. He lives in Berlin and most recently published ‘The Mood of the World’ (2018) and ‘Adorno für Ruinenkinder. Eine Geschichte von 1968’ (‘Adorno for the Children of the Rubble. A History of 1968.’, 2018).
