Herta Müller was born in 1953 in the German-speaking village of Nitzkydorf in the Banat region of Romania. She studied Romanian and German literature in Timisoara. After graduating, she worked as a translator in a mechanical engineering factory. Because she refused to spy on her colleagues for the Romanian secret service Securitate, she lost her job, found only temporary work and was herself targeted by the Securitate. This was followed by interrogations, house searches and defamation. In 1987 she was able to emigrate to Berlin, where she still lives today. Her books have been honoured with numerous awards. Most recently, she was awarded the Prize for Understanding and Tolerance by the Jewish Museum Berlin and the International Bridge Prize of the European City of Görlitz/Zgorzelec, and was inducted into the Order "Pour le mérite". In 2009 she was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature. Her work has been translated into over 50 languages and is published in German by Hanser, most recently the collage volumes "Im Heimweh ist ein blauer Saal" (2019) and "Der Beamte sagte" (2021) as well as "Eine Fliege kommt durch einen halben Wald" (2023).
