As it remains difficult to reach long-term and long-lasting political solutions to many conflicts, a more fundamental reorientation is necessary for humanitarian work, too. The dynamics in conflict regions and in international politics, as well as the digital transformation of our societies, change the conditions for populations to obtain protection and help. The President of the International Committee of the Red Cross, Peter Maurer, will outline the key areas in which we have to move our compass if we are to appropriately meet humanitarian needs.
Peter Maurer, born in 1956, has been the president of the International Committee of the Red Cross since 2012. As the ICRC’s chief diplomat, he travels to conflict regions in a humanitarian and neutral function, and comes together with heads of state, high-ranking officials and conflicting parties in order to find solutions to acute humanitarian issues. Peter Maurer was previously Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs in Bern, as well as Ambassador and Head of Switzerland’s Permanent Mission to the United Nations in New York.
