Short Bio

Josef Joffe, born in 1944, grew up in Berlin, studied politics, economics and philosophy in America and Europe and received his doctorate from Harvard University in 1975. As a lecturer in international politics, Joffe taught in the USA at Johns Hopkins University, Harvard, Princeton and Stanford - in Europe at the University of Munich and the Salzburg Seminar. Joffe began his journalistic career in 1976 at the weekly newspaper "Die Zeit". First as a political editor, then as head of the "Dossier" department. From 1985 to 2000, Joffe was head of the "Foreign Policy" department at the "Süddeutsche Zeitung". In April 2000, he finally became editor of "Die Zeit" alongside Helmut Schmidt and was also its editor-in-chief from 2001 to 2004. Abroad, his essays and articles have appeared in renowned media, including the "New York Times Magazine", the "Wall Street Journal" and the "Washington Post". He has written various books; his latest book, "The Myth of America's Decline", was published in 2014. Joffe serves on various boards of trustees and advisory boards. He has received several awards, including the Ludwig Börne Prize, the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany and the Ludwig Erhard Prize for Economic Journalism.
