Should we let machines and AI do the work for us? In conversation with Martin Meyer, Sibylle Anderl argues that in doing so we lose what makes us human, and makes a case for making an effort ourselves.

The modern world makes many things easier for us: machines take the physical labour off our hands, algorithms are increasingly organising our daily lives, and now AI is even taking over mental tasks. Should we embrace this wholeheartedly? Sibylle Anderl argues that in doing so we risk losing what makes us human, and urges us to make an effort. It is worth seeking out contradiction, daring to try new things, or resisting rewards.
Sibylle Anderl, born in 1981, is an award-winning science journalist. After studying physics and philosophy, she completed her PhD and conducted research in astrophysics. She was an editor in the arts section of the FAZ and head of the science department at the FAZ and FAS; since 2024, she has headed the ‘Knowledge’ department at Die Zeit. She is also co-editor of the cultural magazine Kursbuch.
