More than three years ago, Europe landed in the eye of a geopolitical storm: while Russia has unleashed the largest military war of aggression in Europe since the end of the Second World War against Ukraine and violent conflicts in the Middle East seem to have no end in sight, the European-American relationship is increasingly being put to the test.
Can Europe muster the strength to defend its basic democratic order? What could a new European security architecture look like that leaves no nation defenceless against future aggression?

Nico Lange is a Senior Fellow at the Munich Security Conference and a Senior Fellow at the CEPA think tank in Washington, D.C. Lange teaches at the Chair of Military History at the University of Potsdam and at the Hertie School of Governance. From 2019 to 2022, he headed the management team at the German Federal Ministry of Defence. Previously, Lange worked in German politics, in the United States, Ukraine and Russia. He is fluent in Ukrainian and Russian and is currently researching military strategy and military technology on the battlefield in Ukraine.
