French economist
Thomas Piketty (* 7 May 1971 in Clichy, Département Hauts-de-Seine) is a French economist. He is professor at the Paris School of Economics and the École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales (EHESS). In 2014, his publication „Capital in the 21st century“ (French 2013: Le Capital au XXIe siècle) attracted a great deal of attention worldwide, especially in the USA.

In his book, published in German at C.H.Beck on the day of the lecture, the author, known for his work “Capital in the 21st Century”, provides a panorama of global economic history, a criticism of contemporary politics and the design of a new economic system. His hypothesis: it is not the enforcement of property rights or the pursuit of stability that has been the decisive engine of progress over the centuries – but the struggle for equality and education.
