‘The Future of Capitalism’ confronts the fracture in advanced western civilisations, where cities and their educated societies flourish while the less-educated classes outside of them have to fight with new fears. The subject matter takes the economy back to its basic tenets in the moral relationship between businesses, families and the state, and shows how a successful society has to construct a close-knit network of reciprocal obligations between its members. Nobel laureate George Akerlof describes Paul Collier’s latest book as ‘the most revolutionary work in social science since Keynes’.
Sir Paul Collier, born in 1949, is Professor of Economics and Public Policy at the Blavatnik School of Government, University of Oxford, and previously led the research department of the World Bank. His work encompasses fragile states, the reconstruction of growth in the African economy, the effects of group psychology on development, migration and refugees, urbanisation in poor countries, and the crisis of modern capitalism. A range of books and awards attest to his ability. Paul Collier was knighted in 2014.
