In his latest essay, Schwarz shows how Switzerland’s identity-forming political characteristics can be further developed. What makes the country unique – a special case celebrated by some and demonized by others – are its political institutions. They hold together this nation of wills full of contrasts between young and old, rich and poor, city and country, immigrants and natives, between regions, religions, languages and cultures.

Short Bio

Gerhard Schwarz (*1951), Dr. oec., studied economics in St. Gallen, Great Barrington (Mass.) and Cambridge (Mass.). From 1994 to 2010 he was head of the NZZ economics editorial department, and from 2008 to 2010 deputy editor-in-chief. Until 2016 he was director of the think tank Avenir Suisse, since then he has worked as a publicist and president of the Progress Foundation.
